ENEA

logo_ENEAENEA is the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development. The Agency’s activities are targeted to research, innovation technology and advanced services in the fields of energy - especially nuclear. ENEA performs research activities and provides agency services in support to public administrations, public and private enterprises, and citizens. In particular:

  • Energy efficiency: ENEA covers the role of as National Agency for Energy Efficiency. Its main tasks are to provide support to the Ministry for Economic Development and Regions, to draw up National Action Plans for Energy efficiency and the Annual Report on Energy Efficiency along with technical and scientific support and consultancy services to the State, regions and local bodies to allow them to achieve national energy saving objectives. ENEA develops methods to measure and verify energy savings, provides information to citizens, public administrations, enterprises and economic operators about energy saving instruments and   financial and legal mechanisms for energy efficiency diffusion and promotion.
  • Electric System Research: under a Programme Agreement signed with the Italian Ministry for Economic Development, ENEA carries out R&D activities on urgent and strategic issues whose spin-offs are at the total benefit of the national electric system users: biomass energy potential; coal-dust power plants (performance and cost reduction); new nuclear fission energy; electricity and hydrogen co-production; cogeneration fuel cells; air-conditioning and lighting systems for residential and tertiary sectors; governance and energy efficiency; promotion of efficient technologies; promotion of innovative electric technologies.
  • Technology dissemination and transfer: ENEA carries out technology transfer aiming at increasing the Italian economic system’s competitivity with a view to sustainable development. This activity actually consists in agreements on the use of patents and sharing scientific know-how, setting up research labs, implementing technological innovation projects and supporting the creation of new enterprises
  • Qualification of components and systems: ENEA hosts a whole complex of laboratories and pilot experimental facilities where the complete process of nuclear qualification of components, devices and systems relevant to nuclear safety is performed. The Agency also provides manifold laboratory technical and scientific skills, and performs a wide range of research, measurements and tests in support to nuclear qualification activities: from the preliminary study to the pre-qualification stage, and finally to the activities in support to functional verifications during the very qualification process.
  • Radiation protection: ENEA Radiation Protection Institute owns unique expertise and intervention skills and can fulfill all kinds of needs associated with the use of ionizing radiation in the various research activities and technology applications of the Agency, of public administrations and private users, and not only as activities related to the “nuclear” sector. First in the list is the ionizing radiation medical application, where the highest individual dose values and the major contribution to the average collective dose in the whole world are registered.
  • Support to the national research programme in Antarctica: ENEA runs experimental research on climate change and technological research within the PNRA (National Programme of Research in Antarctica). Together with CNR (the National Research Centre), OGS (the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics), and INGV (the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology). ENEA coordinates two out of twelve PNRA research sectors – Glaciology and Technology – and is member of the National Scientific Committee for Antarctica.
  • Technical and scientific products and services: within its fields of expertise ENEA develops and puts specific analysis and assessment instruments at the disposal and in support of public and private operators working in the fields of energy, the environment and innovation.
